Picture and sound sample of a DW snare drum - solid maple

Every Which Way Including Loose

Just for fun I took this DW and tuned it all different ways, recording each change to document the results for later comparison. DW drums are ideally suited to this because they sound good in so many different tunings.

1. When I picked this drum off the shelf, both heads were tuned a bit low which seemed like a good place to start.

2. The top was then tuned up. Each lug turned 1/4 turn.

3. The top was tuned up another 1/2 turn all around.
It's amazing how tightening to top head too far can drastically choke the sound.

4. The bottom was tuned down. Each lug turned 1/2 turn.

5. The bottom was tuned up. Lugs turned 1 full turn.

6. At this point I abandoned the "let's try every possible tuning" method and attempted to find the snare's sweet spot. To my ears, this was a medium tightness for both heads. I made three variations with this tuning. This is with a loose strainer.

7. This is same tuning with the snare strainer tightened a bit.

8. And finally with the snare strainer tightened a lot.
